Duragate – Frequently Asked Questions

Learn about Duragate engineered personnel gates designed specifically for critical infrastructure.

What is Duragate?

Duragate is an engineered personnel gate system designed specifically for critical infrastructure. Developed by Allied Locks, it combines a galvanised structural frame, reinforced inner frame, fully welded aluminium gate leaf and premium corrosion-resistant hardware to provide decades of reliable operation in demanding outdoor environments.

Duragate was developed after years of working alongside electricity network operators and critical infrastructure owners who were experiencing ongoing problems with conventional industrial gates. Corrosion, sagging, poor alignment and continual maintenance all increase operating costs and reduce reliability. Duragate was engineered to eliminate these issues by providing a gate system specifically designed for long-term outdoor service.

Most industrial gates are designed for general commercial use rather than decades of continuous outdoor exposure. Over time they can sag, corrode, become difficult to operate and fail to close properly. In critical infrastructure, reliable access isn't optional. Duragate has been engineered to maintain its strength, alignment and smooth operation while minimising maintenance throughout its service life.

Duragate isn't simply an aluminium gate. It is a complete engineered gate system comprising:

  • Hot-dip galvanised structural outer frame
  • Reinforced inner operating frame
  • Fully welded aluminium gate leaf
  • Hydraulic gate closer
  • Commercial-grade locking system
  • Premium corrosion-resistant hardware

Every component has been selected to maximise durability, minimise maintenance and provide reliable long-term performance.

Each frame performs a different engineering function. The outer frame provides the structural foundation of the installation, allowing the gate system to be securely integrated into surrounding fencing while maintaining the geometry of the complete assembly. The inner frame supports the gate leaf, hinges, lock, striker and closing hardware, ensuring accurate alignment and smooth, reliable operation. Separating these functions creates a stronger, more reliable gate system.

Each material has been selected for what it does best. The hot-dip galvanised steel frames provide structural strength and rigidity, while the fully welded aluminium gate leaf provides excellent corrosion resistance without unnecessary weight. The result is a gate system that combines the strength of steel with the corrosion resistance of aluminium.

The Duragate gate leaf is fully welded to maximise strength and rigidity. Unlike mechanically assembled gates, fully welded construction resists movement, maintains alignment and contributes to reliable long-term performance in harsh outdoor environments.

Duragate has been engineered to provide exceptional long-term corrosion resistance. The major structural components combine hot-dip galvanised steel and powder-coated aluminium, while many of the smaller components—including handles, hydraulic closer arms, brackets and associated hardware—are custom manufactured from marine-grade stainless steel and 2205 duplex stainless steel where maximum corrosion resistance is required. Even the fasteners are predominantly 316 stainless steel, ensuring corrosion resistance extends throughout the entire assembly rather than just the major structural components. Every significant component has been selected to maximise service life and minimise long-term maintenance.

Absolutely. Duragate has been engineered as a long-term infrastructure asset rather than simply another industrial gate. From the structural frames through to the hinges, locking hardware and closing mechanisms, every significant component has been selected for durability, corrosion resistance and reliable long-term operation. The objective is simple—install it once and expect decades of dependable service.

Every Duragate is supplied with a hydraulic gate closer as standard. The closer provides smooth, controlled closing on every cycle, improving safety, reducing wear on the hinges and locking hardware, and helping ensure the gate reliably returns to the fully closed position after every use. The complete system has been engineered around the closer rather than treating it as an optional accessory.

Yes. Duragate is available in both manual and electro-mechanical configurations and can be integrated with a wide range of electronic access control systems. Provision is made for gate status monitoring via reed switch.

Yes. Duragate can be supplied with locking systems compatible with mainstream master key platforms, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into existing site key management systems.

Yes, although this is an uncommon configuration. Duragate is normally supplied as a complete gate system comprising the fully assembled gate leaf, inner frame and galvanised outer frame. Where suitable structural framing already exists, Duragate can also be supplied without the outer frame. In this configuration, the customer receives the fully assembled gate leaf and inner frame assembly, complete with the hinges, lock, striker, hydraulic closer and associated operating hardware already fitted.

Duragate is supplied as a complete engineered assembly with factory-controlled dimensions. In many installations, two people can install a Duragate in approximately 4–6 hours, helping reduce labour costs, minimise site disruption and deliver a consistent installation outcome.

Duragate is widely used wherever secure, reliable personnel access is required, including:

  • Electricity transmission and distribution substations
  • Solar farms
  • Wind farms
  • Battery energy storage systems
  • Water and wastewater treatment plants
  • Telecommunications facilities
  • Industrial processing plants
  • Petrochemical facilities
  • Ports
  • Airports
  • Other critical infrastructure.

Very little. Its corrosion-resistant materials, premium hardware and engineered construction have been selected to minimise routine maintenance while providing reliable long-term performance. Grease points are incorporated into the hinge assemblies to assist with straightforward preventative maintenance, helping maximise the operating life of the gate.

Engineers and asset owners choose Duragate because it has been engineered specifically for critical infrastructure rather than adapted from a general-purpose industrial gate. Its combination of structural integrity, corrosion resistance, reliable operation and efficient installation helps reduce maintenance, minimise downtime and lower whole-of-life ownership costs.

For decades, Allied Locks has worked alongside New Zealand's electricity industry and other critical infrastructure owners, developing practical solutions for harsh outdoor environments. That real-world experience is reflected in products that are engineered for reliability, durability and long-term performance—not simply manufactured to a price.

Duragate wasn't developed to be another industrial gate. It was developed to solve the long-term problems associated with conventional gates operating in harsh outdoor environments. Every significant component has been selected with longevity in mind—from the galvanised structural outer frame and reinforced inner frame to the fully welded aluminium gate leaf, hydraulic closer, premium locking hardware and custom stainless steel components. The result is an engineered gate system designed to deliver decades of reliable operation while reducing maintenance and lowering whole-of-life ownership costs.
